Hormonal imbalances refer to a condition where the body's hormonal system is not functioning properly.

Hormones are chemical messengers produced in glands such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, ovaries, and testicles. These hormones play a crucial role in regulating many of the body’s functions, including metabolism, reproduction, growth, energy levels, and mood regulation.

When there is an imbalance in hormone production or regulation, it can lead to a range of symptoms and health problems. Hormonal imbalances can be caused by various factors, including:

Age: Hormone levels can change with age, such as menopause in women or andropause in men. For most women (and men), menopause leads to a decline in hormones that are essential for a well-functioning immune system. Many may experience more frequent infections during menopause, and it may take longer to recover from an infection. The same decline in hormones, especially sex hormones, can contribute to a sense of vitality loss, reduced energy, decreased libido, and an increased feeling of aging, frailty, and hopelessness. However, this doesn’t have to be the case, and steps can be taken to address these changes.

Diseases: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or thyroid problems, can affect hormone levels.

Stress: Chronic stress can affect the adrenal glands, and prolonged stress can cause stress hormones to “hijack” building blocks for other hormones, leading to an imbalance that affects the entire body.

Diet and exercise: An unhealthy lifestyle, including poor diet and lack of exercise, contributes to a hormonal imbalance. Even moderate exercise can be enough to gradually help restore hormonal balance, along with other measures.

Medication: Some medications can disrupt hormonal balance as a side effect.

Environmental factors: Exposure to environmental toxins and chemicals can affect hormone balance. Read more about where endocrine-disrupting chemicals are especially found and how to avoid them here.

Symptoms of hormonal imbalances can vary depending on which hormones are affected and the degree of imbalance. Common symptoms include mood swings, fatigue, weight gain or loss, irregular menstruation, fertility problems, hot flashes, reduced libido, depression, sleep problems, and changes in your skin.

I have chosen to specialize in this area and have completed a one-year advanced training in “Support and care for Hormone issues and Gynecological Challenges.”

The treatment of hormonal imbalances depends on the cause and severity of the problem. This may include lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, medication, and hormone therapy, depending on the situation. I recommend a health check and blood tests with your doctor before coming for a consultation with me.

When you book a consultation with me, needing help with hormonal imbalances, we typically examine your diet, looking for any foods your body may not tolerate, resulting in stress. We also look into potential vitamin deficiencies, habits, exercise, various factors that  in your life that act as a constant burden. We take a closer look into your health history as a whole. You will receive a personalized program to follow, incorporating solutions such as diet, exercise, vitamins, herbs, and homeopathy. Laboratory tests may be considered to take a deeper look into the underlying issues.

Additionally, I recommend booking a package that includes four sessions of manual therapy and follow-ups. This approach yields the best results, and my experience shows that it works well, providing strong support to turn your life in the right direction, allowing you more energy to continue with positive habits.

Manual therapy forms that I typically offer in the context of hormonal imbalances include reflexology, connective tissue massage/craniosacral therapy, and ear acupuncture. (read more here)
